About Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks is one of the larger cities in Ventura County, with a population of roughly 126,000 people. It sits in the Conejo Valley and was developed as a planned community beginning in the early 1960s. The city consistently ranks among the most livable in the country, with high homeownership rates, above-average household incomes, and a long-term-resident character that comes partly from major employers like Amgen, which has been headquartered here since 1980. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area borders the city to the south, and large portions of the surrounding land are protected open space, giving the city its characteristic hillside-and-valley feel. More background is available in the Thousand Oaks Wikipedia article.
The city is made up of distinct neighborhoods with their own character. Newbury Park, in the western part of the city, has some of the older single-story ranch and California-ranch homes from the 1960s and early 1970s. Lynn Ranch and hillside areas near the open space preserves have larger lots and properties with more complex site conditions. Lang Ranch, developed in the 1990s and 2000s in the eastern part of the city, has newer two-story homes near its own community park and shopping areas. Thousand Oaks Boulevard runs east-west through the city center and is the main commercial and civic corridor, anchored by places like The Gardens of the World free public garden that residents visit year-round.
